Joseph Caulkins

Joseph Caulkins is known for adventurous programming, world premieres, and imaginative collaborations. That same spirit informs his work as a freelance writer and accomplished alpinist, shaping a leadership style focused on bringing out the best in everyone—from professional musicians and dancers to students, circus artists, and people living with Parkinson’s and memory loss.

Since 2007, Caulkins has served as Artistic Director of Key Chorale, guiding the ensemble’s growth through innovative performances, artistic partnerships, and meaningful community engagement. In 2019, he received the Arts Leadership Award for Artistic Achievement from the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. His programming spans masterworks, Baroque, contemporary music, pops, and ballet collaborations, with a special commitment to new and rarely performed works.

Dedicated to making singing accessible to all, Caulkins created the Come Together Choir Turnkey Music Toolkits for Senior Enrichment, resources designed to foster connection, creativity, and cognitive engagement through music. He is also the author of Developing Choral Sound Through the Warm-Up, a collection of more than 200 vocal exercises for singers, teachers, and conductors.

As a guest conductor, Caulkins has led The Venice Symphony, Space Coast Pops, The Sarasota Ballet, and the Southwest Florida Symphony, where he served as Associate Conductor and Director of Choruses. Earlier positions included Artistic Director of the Bach Chamber Choir in Illinois and conductor at Benedictine University, where he produced recordings, led European tours, and commissioned works from composers such as Dale Warland, Eric Whitacre, and Ola Gjeilo.

KEY CHORALE
