Ensemble Work I have been fortunate—through both hard work and learning from experience—to gain knowledge about investment risks and rewards over the years. One of my favorite quotes is from Albert Einstein: "Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience. You need experience to gain wisdom."
Much of that experience has been the result of living and working through a number of bear markets and stock market bubbles including: 1987 Crash (Black Monday), 1990 Gulf War, 1999-2002 Internet Stock Craze (Dot Com Bubble and Burst), 2007 – 2009 Great Financial Crisis (Subprime Mortgages), 2020 – 2021 Covid Stock Panic and Recovery, and 2022 Post Pandemic Inflation Crisis.
Some highlights from my career: 2004-2002 Head of US Fixed for Credit Suisse, 2008 – 2014; Partner and Portfolio Manager, Caxton and Associates (Global Macro Hedge Fund in New York); more recently, I was Chief Investment Officer of CAPTRUST, a rapidly growing RIA with hundreds of financial advisors and assets under management (AUM) of $60 billion, Endowment & Foundation and Pension assets under advisement (AUA) of $550 billion, and an investment team of thirty-two. As a C-Suite executive, I helped recruit and close twenty-four acquisitions as well as set strategic planning and vision for the firm.
In addition to my direct experience as an Alternative Investment portfolio manager, I have assembled a curated menu of alternative investments for both large endowments and high/ultra-high net worth investors including Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Estate, Hedge Funds, and Infrastructure Funds. I have conducted due diligence on many investment firms (including public equity and fixed income), managed investment portfolios comprised of individual stocks and bonds, and ETFs and funds, and incorporated institutional-quality hedge fund risk management techniques.
I’m excited to bring my experience and passion for what I do to the team at Cantata Wealth. I have devoted myself to being a life-long learner and student of investing. I hold a Master’s degree in Financial Management and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™(CFP®) designations.
Solo Work I enjoy walking my dog while listening to investment podcasts and news. I serve on the board of Chestnut Hill College, as a volunteer firefighter, and my wife and I have volunteered as foster parents. I also enjoy singing bass in my church choir.
